A handful for sure

Should Christians observe a day of rest each week? This article is spot on IMHO. Read it carefully to help you prepare to teach Step 4 of “Keeping Commitments”, which is based on Nehemiah 13:15-18.

This lesson is shaping up to be challenging because members will need to contrast New Testament teaching on tithing and observance of the Sabbath with that as taught in the Old Testament. Principle versus command, or how do you plan to treat the topic of tithing and Sabbath observance?

I'v struggled w/ lesson b/c could be very legalistic.I'm taking a NT approach: temple/our bodies & how commitments get neglected.Tithe/ neglecting participating we cheat self of the blessings of the work of God (Treasure Principle by Randy Alcorn, good resource on nt tithe)&Sabbath/ need ;worship to nourish souls, but rest to replinish our bodies. Overall taking a personal inventory of commitment;how after time we loose zeal & energy slip into patterns of personal neglect. May even address Marriage issue in later part of verse& the essential nature
of nurturing this ever changing, growing relationship. Opening story from Tyler Morning Telegraph tylerpaper.com 1/25/07 new life comes to neighborhood (clean up story) junked cars, tires, structures demolishing, and awareness now of resources neighbors never knew about but chose to live in "ruin"..continuing the clean up of the ruins idea and often slip back to comfortable patterns and habits of old when God's resourses are so available to us!

I appreciate your what you are saying about the potential for legalism. The
lesson offers a good opportunity to understand what the Bible teaches about
tithing as well as observing the Sabbath.
