With a goal of teaching the Bible to transform adult lives, I search for object lessons, illustrations, exercises, etc. I post these (and some original ideas) in hopes other teachers will benefit, too.
What is your take on Genesis 44:15 with reference to Deut 18: 9-12?
"15 Joseph said to them, "What is this you have done? Don't you know that a man like me can find things out by divination?"" (NIV)
I had someone in my SS class ask me about this and I wasnt really prepared to respond. My first thought is that this is 'part of the game' Joseph is playing with his brothers. Not uncommon for true Egyptian leadership to 'practice divination' but you wouldnt expect it from a man of God like Joseph. I think Jospeph was simply posturing so the brothers wouldnt call his bluff.
As I prepared, the same thought occurred to me as your first thought. I didn't do any research on it, but I mentioned the purpose of the silver cup for divination in class, and no one questioned it.
Keith Krell (writing for bible.org) also thinks it was part of the ruse. See http://www.bible.org/page.php?page_id=4628
