Stumped

Based on Job 31:13-17, Step 3 of LifeWay lesson “Analyze Your Actions” focuses on avoiding arrogance and selfishness. Job was humble. He treated servants, the poor, and widows justly, and he also feared God.

I’m a bit stumped on how to challenge members to demonstrate these same qualities in their lives. Maybe some of you teachers who are reading this blog would be willing to share how you plan to approach this in your class?

I think part of what has you stumped you is the break down of the passages you have been given. The application is for verses 13-15. Job obviously took seriously the fact that those under him were created by God the Master and should be treated as such. Similar sentiment to Pauls writings in Eph 6:9

"And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him.

Job considered any act of injustice to those under him as an affront to God.

Eliphaz has already accused Job of gross sins against the poor in chapter 22. Although Job had spoken positivley about the depth of his social conscience, in verses 16-23 he once again responds and continues the poetic context of the passage with a series of oaths addressing just such an issue. It is the final fierce self-imprecation that Job ends this this with. Verse 23 is pivital to understanding this oath as it applies to all oaths, for it contains what any oath would need to have meaning and that is the fear of God.

I don't know how much liberty you have to change the quarterly, but I would change the break up of the passages. The ESV bible does a great job of their partitions of Job, and it is available at biblegateway also. The NIV not so much.

Also a word study on the word "desires" which does not mean "needs" may give you some insight into what you are looking for as far as application.

Quick note. I do not have the Lifeway material. I am assuming the text break down by you link on the post.

Thanks Scott for helping out.

You’re correct about the link. The text breakdown is an editorial decision at LifeWay, but teachers have flexibility to emphasize passages as they are lead.

I looked at the ESV and it's nice how it sections off the verses in Job 31 (NLT does, too). HCSB is like the NIV in that neither sets apart the verses.

Desire as in "wish", or "pleasure", I suppose? This goes well beyond simply meeting a need! Nice application idea.

Appreciate it,
Ronnie

It has been my experience that we have many opportunities to treat "servants" in a Godly manner. We usually enjoy a meal out after church on Sundays. It never ceases to amaze me that church going people treat their waiters and waitresses so poorly during their meal. This is a perfect opportunity to exercise Godly behaviour to those who work on the Lord's day. Also offering water to those who labor in the heat on yards, roofs, and vehicles can be a simple act of treating your "neighbors" in a Godly fashion. Most students in my class are retired and frequently travel. Exercising Godly behaviour on travel is an easy thing to perform. The witness opportunities alone are nearly endless
